Toru Nishimura is a media business tycoon and a friend of Lara Croft. Before becoming a well-known businessman, Nishimura had a daring job of an investigative reporter, occasionally crossing paths with Lara Croft more than once on dangerous investigations. His strong friendship with Lara began when on one mission, the latter rescued him when he uncovered a plot involving a corrupt cabinet minister and an ancient artifact.
Despite his wealth, good-humored attitude and comfortable lifestyle, he still has a taste for adventure and risk, and is always glad to see Lara whenever her latest adventure brings her to town. He takes more caution due to responsibilities and obligations, some of them a bit unsavory - and as such, he has good relations with the Japanese mafia.
